Uterine fibroids are the commonest benign tumors of the uterus. About 20-30% of woman suffer from this problem in their reproductive age group.
They usually come with
- Menstrual problems (excess bleeding, irregular bleeding)
- Feeling of the tumor in the abdomen
Uncommonly there will be accidental diagnosis of this problem in asymptomatic woman.
Investigations done include Ultrasound which will usually pick this type of pathology. MRI may be recommended for some cases.
Both Open and Laparoscopy method are available.
Laparoscopic method has got its advantage of being minimally invasive and faster recovery.
If the woman is desirous of preserving her uterus, then Myomectomy (removal of the uterus) can be done.
If the woman has finished the family crossed 40 years of age and is unwilling to retain uterus then Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) can be recommended. There are 3 methods of Hysterectomy available.
