Varicose veins are dilated, torturous and visible veins that can lead to a series of serious health problems. Veins are like balloons. Once they are deceased they don’t get back to their normal condition.

60% of the population are at the risk of having varicose veins of which 30% will progress to complication stage.

Common symptoms include

  • Pain in the leg
  • Swelling in the leg
  • Skin gangrene
  • Ulcers
  • Clot formations in the leg

A varicose vein as long as they don’t give any of the above symptoms no treatment is required. Once you have any of the above mentioned symptoms please consult a vascular surgeon at the earliest.

Treatment of varicose veins:

Varicose veins can be treated by three means:

  1. Medical treatment
  2. Surgical treatment – Injections/Surgery/Laser (Radio frequency ablation)
  3. Other means where in the patient is asked to wear stockings

Varicose veins surgery normally takes a long duration of time and patient needs an admission for more than a week. It is a painful procedure.

The latest treatment of Varicose veins is Laser Radio frequency ablation surgery. This is a day care surgery wherein the patient can get the surgery done in the morning under local anaesthesia and go home by evening.  It is a completely painless surgery.

Advantages of laser – radio frequency ablation surgery:

  1. Painless
  2. General anaesthesia is not required
  3. Day care procedure (No stay in the hospital is required)
  4. High success rate
  5. Less complications
  6. Cost effective
  7. Minimal scars

Post surgery the patient is advised to wear stockings for 2 months.

Laser Radio frequency ablation has a higher success rate than the normal surgery.

Laser Radio frequency ablation surgery is done regularly at Pristine Hospital.
